Enchanted - Part 8
The next day was mostly spent inside, because of the rain.
“It usually doesn’t rain so heavily during this time, but weather is always unpredictable” Bob said opening the window and letting fresh air in. “Even then, we will still have to go to the ceremony”
“What ceremony?” Pallavi asked munching on her wafers
“To honor Tital and Clia, we told you yesterday, you all are invited as well”
Pallavi nodded and turned to look in Shelly’s direction, who herself was too busy staring at Bob. Maybe Vanya was right, maybe something was going on between the two of them, but even so they didn’t have enough proof.
By evening, the rain had halted and they were all asked to change into their robes. The girls found the dresses to be ridiculous, yet beautiful. Their gowns were elaborate, full of gold and stones and actually quite heavy to carry. Each of them was provided with a maid, who ensured that they looked beautiful. All of the girls had let their hair down.
Pat had never seen such a beautiful avatar of Jess before. He was enthralled by her beauty.
“Ready to go?” Gerard asked
“I guess” Shelly replied looking at all the others who were ready as well.
They left in three royal chariots, heavily decorated with gold, truly elucidating the grandeur of the king. The palace was massive. Never having seen such a huge structure ever before, Pallavi gasped. It was like a high rise building spread over a large estate.
“Man this could give queen Elizabeth a complex!” Vanya shrieked.
The chariots dropped them very close to the entrance, so they didn’t have to walk the kilometer long stretch between the palace gates and the main entrance. Climbing up the steps, Pallavi noticed inscriptions on the sides. It looked like an ancient script, so she asked what it said to Frank, who was nearest to her.
“That’s the Andronian script. It’s a royal language. No one but the king and his family are allowed to speak in Andronian language. These verses are written in the praise of our kings that have ruled this place for centuries. “
“Oh”
She looked up at the wooden doors, leading into the great hall. It was huge, with pointed arcs on both the doorways.
“What’s that hanging from the arc?”
“Those are the two acquaintances of the goddess Frejya, something like her different avatars – orata and Thalia”
They all stepped inside the hall to experience its beauty. In the farthest corner sat the king and his queen, looking over the lavish festive. In the heart of the hall, men and women danced, wearing elaborate dresses, but their glitter was dimmed by the shine of the palace. Even at night it looked as if, it was daylight inside. The walls were all made of white marble, and the sculptures engraved in the wall were all gold, carved on alternate pillars, holding up the hall ceiling.
Royal green drapes hanging from between the pillars were drawn apart. The area was illuminated by the colossal chandeliers. Pallavi could’ve gone on staring at those chandeliers, had not Gerard asked them to go and give the king their respect first.
Gerard taking hold of Vanya's hand led them through the crowd. Patrick held Jess by the waist and followed. Bob hurried to be by Shelly’s side, Mikey already had his friend along and rank stood by Pallavi.
“Just follow us” Gerard said and stopped and bowed I front of the king and the queen.
“Raise my faithful warriors” the king said in a deep voice. “Would these be your friends?”
“Aye, my lord”
The queen looked at them smiling a bit, and welcomed them. She had a voice sweeter than that of honey. “Enjoy the night”
They all bowed down again and walked to a side. Ray came to stand with them.
“How did he tame his afro?” Vanya chuckled
“Magic” Gerard winked and led her to the dance floor
She giggled a bit and curled her hands around his chest. He was so tall; she only came up to his chest.
“Where’s the music coming from?” as there was no orchestra playing anywhere near them.
“It’s the music of the animals who rejoice this time of the year, like us. The birds chirp and the unicorns, funnily enough give the beat”
“There are unicorns here?”
Gerard smiled and looked at other friends who were also enjoying a lot. Bob and Shelly also joined them in the dance, leaving Pallavi to stand alone in the corner.
“Why are you still here?” Frank demanded off her
“Where else should I be Iero?”
“Dancing”
“I don’t want to”
“What rubbish! Yes you do – come on” he took her hand
“Frank!”
“Come on dance for my sake!”
“Not really the best trigger” she laughed
“Okay fine, so dance for the sake of all the hatred you have for me”
“Too bad I don’t hate you”
“Oh you don’t! Well then dance for Andronia's beauty”
“Hmm…that will do”
She went onto the dance floor with him, twirling and taping to the beats, moving her body, in the most graceful ways.
Around her, she saw her friends, which made her happy, but she saw that thing again and before she could alert anyone - too many things had already happened
